About Us
The Los Alamos Historical Museum and Bookshop are housed in the Guest Cottage of the Los Alamos Ranch School, a favorite spot of Gen. Leslie Groves during the Manhattan Project.
The Los Alamos Historical Society keeps alive the unique cultural, scientific, and historical legacy of Los Alamos and related regions.
Why do we say "related regions" in our mission statement? The story of Los Alamos cannot be told without Bandelier National Monument; 109 East Palace Ave. in Santa Fe; Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Hanford, Wash.; Espanola and other communities in northern New Mexico. They are all part of our rich heritage.
The Society maintains the Los Alamos Historic Museum and Bookshop as well as the Los Alamos Historical Archives. We also publish a variety of books on the history of Los Alamos and the surrounding region, sponsor monthly historical lectures, and provide a variety of activities to promote the history of Los Alamos. The Historical Society owns and maintains historically significant properties, such as the J. Robert Oppenheimer house, in Los Alamos for the purposes of preservation and education.
The Los Alamos Historical Society is a non-profit, 501(c)-3 organization incorporated under the laws of the state of New Mexico. Membership is open to all persons interested in the purposes of the society. The society is run by a Board of Directors, listed below.
Contributions to the Society are tax-deductible.

Purpose Statements from some of our standing Board Committees:
The purpose of the Publications Committee of the Los Alamos Historical Society is to promote and record the history of the Los Alamos area through the publication of books that might not ordinarily be available to the public. The Committee sees this as an important contribution to the Society's mandate "to foster an appreciation of the history and cultural heritage of the Los Alamos area" and "to advance historical research and preservation."
The Historic Preservation Committee of the Los Alamos Historical Society maintains historic properties owned by the society and works to acquire more as funds for acquistion and maintenance.
